Tres Tribus Releases Limited Edition Ancestral-Style Mezcal Inspired by Día de los Muertos

Tres Tribus, the award-winning, B Corp certified, small batch mezcal from the remote mountains of Oaxaca today announced the release of a limited edition, ancestral-style mezcal inspired by the ofrendas displayed around Oaxaca for Día de los Muertos.

Hand-crafted by fifth generation mezcalero Juan Antonio Coronel, Espadín magueys are cooked in an underground conical oven, hand-mashed using wooden mallets and fermented in underground amphoras before being distilled in clay pots. The second distillation is done with local ingredients typically found in offerings placed on altars for Día de los Muertos, including cempasúchil (marigold flower), orange, tangerine, grapefruit and quince. The mezcal has rested in glass for two years prior to its release.

“This mezcal celebrates the traditions of Mexico and especially of Oaxaca where the festivals of all the saints and the faithful departed are present, for this reason we distill the best that we have at home to receive the soul of those who came forward,” said Coronel. “This mezcal is styled in an ancestral way, cooked in a conical oven, fermented in ahuhuete vats, and double distilled in clay pots to achieve a spirit that brings us closer to our loved ones and honors them with a drink at the altar.”

“This mezcal is exquisitely complex and beautiful, and represents a masterpiece that commemorates the heritage of Oaxaca,” said Juan Coronado, Co-Founder of Tres Tribus. “The floral and citrus notes are inviting, and delicately balance the hint of smoke and green notes from the magueys, making this an ideal mezcal to go back to time and again.”

Tres Tribus debuted in 2023 with four celebrated expressions that helped the brand win the IWSC Agave Producer of the Year as well as the organization’s most prestigious prize, Spirits Producer of the Year. In addition, Tres Tribus’ Ensamble won Gold Outstanding with 98 points and the Tobalá won Gold with 97 points at the IWSC 2023 Spirits Awards. Separately, Tres Tribus’ Espadín Capon received a 99-point rating from Tasting Panel Magazine. The brand debuted its Espadín earlier this year.
